How to Upgrade Your Garage with Porcelain Tile Flooring

Transform that dirty, old cluttered garage into a beautiful showroom floor with porcelain tile flooring.

Porcelain tile for a garage floor typically isn’t something people consider when looking at garage flooring options.  Generally porcelain tile is only used inside the home and not in the garage, right?

Contrary to popular belief, more home owners are opting for sleek, design inspired residential garages and porcelain tiles are becoming the most sought after choice to achieve that look.

The durability of porcelain tiles are used quite frequently for showroom floors at prestigious auto dealerships, professional automotive garages, hotel porticos and many other commercial applications.

So why not transform your own garage floor?

Benefits of Porcelain Tile Flooring

The inspiration to use porcelain tile flooring at many high-end businesses isn’t just because of its luxurious appearance, but also because of its extreme durability and easy maintenance.

Because of porcelain tiles’ high density when manufactured, it also absorbs very little moisture which makes it virtually impervious to any type of stains.  The high density also makes it resistant to frost, scratch and chip resistant and resistant to heavy loads and impacts.  In addition, porcelain tile has a very high resilience to abrasion, is not affected by harsh cleaners or chemicals and will not fade in sunlight.

In the event that you fracture or break a tile, they can easily be removed and replaced with a new one.

Another benefit to porcelain tile flooring in your garage is that with the correct tile rating, porcelain isn’t as slippery as standard concrete floors when wet.  This is the main reason why it is the popular choice for entrances that are exposed to the weather.

Porcelain tiles also come in a variety of different sizes so go ahead and get creative with your garage floor design.

Porcelain Tile Ratings

There are three elements of porcelain tile you should be aware of when choosing your garage flooring. The tiles are rated for three different categories; hardness, skid resistance, and moisture absorption.

The hardness rating is indicated by the PEI scale (Porcelain Enamel Institute).  The PEI scale helps determine the durability of the tile in terms of how well the surface performs against traffic and abrasions before showing signs of wear. For garage flooring you want to select a tile that has a 4 or 5 rating on the PEI scale.

Skid Resistance

Skid resistance is measured by the amount of friction on a wet surface.  In order to determine the proper type of flooring for your project, the Ceramic Tile Institute has created three categories based on skid resistance ratings.

  • A tile rating of 0.60 or greater is deemed slip resistant and meets the OSHA and ADA requirements for a wet surface.
  • A tile rating of 0.50 to 0.59 is regarded as conditionally slip resistant and also meets OSHA requirements.
  • A tile rating of 0.50 or below is considered questionable for slip resistance.

Moisture Absorption

In order to be certified as quality porcelain tile, it must have a rating of 0.5% or below for moisture which is the equivalent of water resistant.  This is what makes porcelain tile resistant to frost, stains and water damage. The majority of porcelain tiles have these ratings displayed on the packaging, but if not you can contact the manufacturer or a professional tile company.

Cost of Porcelain Tile Garage Flooring

The cost of porcelain tiles can vary depending on the size, color, texture and ratings. Additionally, you need to factor in the cost of materials besides the tile such as grout and mortar.

Selecting a darker colored grout is typically preferred for its ability to hide dirt and not discolor.

If you have been searching for a garage flooring option that is beautiful and durable, then installing porcelain tile throughout your garage is the answer. Porcelain tile will not only last for years to come but is a great home improvement investment.
