The Uses and Benefits of Natural Stone

Learn about the advantages and applications of natural stone.

Natural stone refers to a number of different products that are quarried from the earth, including marble, granite, slate, onyx, and sandstone. Natural stone has a beautiful, unique appearance that can’t be replicated in a lab. Natural stone comes in a number of different colors and textures, so it has limitless design potential. There has been a growing trend in recent years to use natural stone for both structural and decorative elements in residences.

Interior and Exterior Applications of Natural Stone

You can enjoy the beauty of natural stone in an array of interior and exterior applications. It can often last for decades with a little maintenance. Natural stone is mothers nature’s “green” building material because it is a readily available, naturally occurring material that doesn’t release chemicals into the environment during its production or disposal and doesn’t produce off-gases that affect indoor air quality.

Interior applications for natural stone include fireplaces, flooring, bathrooms, walls, kitchens, atriums, countertops, and wine cellars. Exterior applications for natural stone include walls, patios, chimneys, pools and pool surrounds, and siding for homes.

Types of Natural Stone

There are many types of natural stone, including granite, marble, travertine, sandstone, limestone, onyx, and slate. Granite, onyx, and marble are available in a broad range of colors, including gold, black, green, blue, and multi-hued varieties. Natural stone can be polished to bring out its rich color and texture. It is typically polished when it is used to make furniture, countertops, and walls. Natural stone can also be honed, which gives it a satin smooth finish with relatively little light reflection.

Marble is a fairly soft stone that is recommended for floors, foyers, bathrooms, and fireplace hearths. Marble is sensitive to discoloration when it is exposed to coffee, tea, citric acid, wine, and other substances - so it can be difficult to maintain when installed in kitchens. However, if marble is cared for and treated properly it can be a beautiful and timeless addition to your kitchen. White marble in particular is a new trend that we are seeing more and more of in kitchens.

Granite is ideal for kitchen applications and high-traffic floors because it is resistant to heat, bacteria, and stains. Unlike other types of natural stone, coffee, tea, wine, and alcohol don’t affect granite. Granite is also difficult to scratch and won’t stain as long as you seal it properly and clean spills immediately.

Slate is a durable and stain-resistant stone that comes in multiple shades. Slate is often used for cladding, flooring, fireplace facings, tabletops, and roofing. Quartzite has a naturally non-skid texture, so it is ideal for both interior and exterior flooring. Sandstone is used to make floors, pavers, and walls because of its durability. Limestone and travertine are the preferred choice for applications in family or living rooms because they have soft, muted colors that promote rest and relaxation. Onyx is a translucent stone with a glossy, polished surface that is available in many shades.
